Aston Villa manager Dean Smith is already planning for next season, with QPR defender Toni Leistner a potential target, according to a report in the Birmingham Mail.

But despite the fact that defence is an area that needs addressing at Villa and the fact that Leistner is having an impressive season at QPR, is he a player that would suit Dean Smith's side.

Or, is it simply a question of can Villa do better than Leistner?

We discuss.....

Jacob Potter

"I think there are better options out there for Villa.

"Leistner has been a standout player for QPR this season and he’s fully deserving of a transfer to a more reputable club.

"But I think in the current market, there are better options suited to this Aston Villa side in the near future."

Jay Taylor

“In terms of ability, they could well do – but leadership is what they need and what Leistner lacks in that department, he makes up or in a captain’s role.

“I for one think it would be a pretty solid signing by Villa as you never know how transfers will pan out until way after they’ve been completed.

“You have to give and take and if leadership is what Smith wants, it’s a great signing.”

Gary Hutchinson

“I would certainly hope so.

“He’s a decent lad though, so should they actually not be aiming for big names and huge signings, but taking these experienced players on board?

“He’s Championship ready and understands the division.

“I’ll tell you this, they could do worse as well.”

Alfie Burns

“That’s extremely harsh on the player.

“For me, he’s been a good option in the heart of QPR’s defence this season and is more than capable at Championship level.

“Villa shouldn’t be egotistical with these things.”
