West Brom are yet to receive an approach from Aston Villa for winger Matt Phillips, reports from Birmingham Live have confirmed.

The Villans have spent nearly £100m on new signings this summer, as Dean Smith's side look to cement their place in the Premier League upon their return to the top-flight.

Reports from Football Insider claim that Villa don't plan on stopping there, though, with the West Midlands side reportedly making an approach for Albion winger Matt Phillips.

The Scotland international was one of West Brom's most important players in their push for promotion last season, scoring five goals and producing six assists in what was a season hampered by injuries.

The 28-year-old is currently entering the final year of his contract at The Hawthorns, with Football Insider claiming that Villa are looking to pounce on his contract situation by making an approach.

But now, Birmingham Live have confirmed that West Brom are yet to have received an approach from Villa for the winger, who will be hoping to be another standout performer in the Championship next season.

Albion have already lost plenty of key players this summer, with their two leading goalscorers Jay Rodriguez and Dwight Gayle leaving for Burnley and returning to Newcastle respectively.

Slaven Bilic's side face Nottingham Forest at the City Ground this weekend, in the first game of the 2019/20 campaign.

The Verdict

When I first saw the rumour that Villa had made an approach for Phillips, I was quite surprised.

They have already added the likes of Jota, Anwar El Ghazi and Trezeguet to their squad this summer, and it would be very surprising to see them add another winger to their squad.

Phillips is such an important player for West Brom, and it's bound to come as a massive relief to Albion fans that they are yet to receive an offer for his services from one of their main rivals.
