Middlesbrough midfielder Gaston Ramirez looks set to leave the Championship side this summer as Garry Monk’s overhaul is set to continue at the Riverside Stadium, according to his agent via Estadio Deportivo.
The 26-year-old only moved to the North East outfit back in January last year after falling out of favour at Southampton, to the point that he was shipped out on loan to Hull City for the duration of the 2014/15 campaign, in which time he netted just once in 22 appearances for the Tigers.
However, the Uruguay international scored seven goals in just 18 games to help Aitor Karanka’s Boro achieve promotion to the Premier League back in 2016, yet he was one of many to underperform in their top tier campaign last term, bagging just twice in 24 league appearances.
And it appears that his time on Teesside is set to end this summer, as his agent has recently stated that he is ‘almost convinced’ that the midfielder will be on his way in the coming weeks and months, with La Liga outfit Real Betis a potential destination.
He said: ‘He must leave Middlesbrough.
‘I am almost convinced that he is leaving and, on Monday, Betis will go in strongly for him.
‘Middlesbrough are a little hard. They don’t to give any kind of ease with the clause, which is €12m for his departure.’
These comments are sure to interest Boro supporters, who have seen new boss Monk come in and stamp his authority on the squad with signings like Jonny Howson, Cyrus Christie, and Britt Assombalonga, while the likes of Viktor Fischer, Antonio Barragan, and Cristhian Stuani have all left the club.
The North East outfit are one of the favourites for promotion next season but whether Ramirez, who helped them achieve that feat 18 months ago, will be part of that effort very much remains to be seen.
