Birmingham City appear to have completed the great escape under Garry Monk's stewardship, with the former Middlesbrough and Leeds boss guiding the Blues away from the bottom three in recent weeks.

A remarkable turnaround given the West Midlands side looked destined for the drop, Monk will head into the summer with the intention of building a side capable of avoiding a third consecutive relegation scrap next season.

This time last year Harry Redknapp achieved the same, beating Bristol City on the final day to secure Birmingham's second tier status, but was sacked just a handful of games into the new season despite a promising summer filled with exciting acquisitions.

Monk may not be afforded the budget his predecessor enjoyed and could turn to cut-price deals for this already relegated Sunderland pair...

The Blues have struggled for creativity this season, scoring less than forty goals in what has been a frustrating year in front of goal for the fans.

The numbers are there in the striking positions, with Sam Gallagher and Lukas Jutkiewicz ready and waiting to find the back of the net but the service simply hasn't been on offer at St Andrew's.

Sunderland's Aiden McGeady could provide the perfect remedy to the problem, with the 32-year-old Irishman certain to leave The Stadium of Light in the summer.

McGeady impressed at Preston North End before following Simon Grayson to the north east, but could be tempted to link up with the Blues should the offer be right.

Having enjoyed an impressive career at both club and international level, McGeady would be a welcome addition to a squad crying out for a level-headed, experienced player, and should firmly be on Monk's radar in the coming weeks.

The Northern Irishman forced his way into the first-team set-up at boyhood club Manchester United before being sold to the Black Cats during their ill-fated final year in the Premier League and could be on the lookout for another club in the near future.

The versatile man has enjoyed something of a resurgence in recent weeks, finding the net in three successive matches following a difficult season littered with injuries and could finally be building upon the promise shown whilst at Old Trafford as a youngster.

Now twenty-three, the player must kick on if he is to become a regular in Michael O'Neill's Northern Irish side and a switch to St Andrew's could be exactly what the player needs.

His versatility and reasonable wage demands will appeal to Monk who will look to build a squad blessed with quality in depth and McNair could become a key figure in the side.

He won't want to fall into the third tier and with the Black Cats looking to offload players, he could be available for a steal.
