League One side MK Dons have agreed a deal to sign former Reading right-back Tennai Watson after a successful trial, according to Football Insider.

The 24-year-old graduated through the Royals academy and made a slight breakthrough in Berkshire at the start of the 2016/17 season, with Jaap Stam taking a chance on him and making seven appearances during that campaign.

Although three of Watson's appearances that year came in the Championship, his toughest test was in the League Cup against Arsenal and was one of Reading's shining lights as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at the Emirates.

However, he was rarely given a chance after the Dutch manager left and with senior pros Andy Yiadom and Chris Gunter both keeping the right-back out of the first-team squad, he was shipped out on loan to AFC Wimbledon and Coventry City between 2018 and 2020.

The duo's ability to stay fully fit for long periods gave Watson no chance of forcing his way back into the team until Gunter's departure last summer.

But even with Andy Yiadom's injury at the start of last season and new manager Veljko Paunovic in place, central midfielder Felipe Araruna and centre-back Tom Holmes were preferred as alternatives to the Ghanaian, signalling the end of his playing career at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

He was released along with Sam Baldock, Sone Aluko and Sam Walker this summer - and will now link up with Russell Martin's MK Dons who will be hoping to build on last season's 11th-place finish in League One.

The Verdict:

After the expiration of Ethan Laird's loan deal in Milton Keynes, it was essential Martin found a replacement for him and has landed a permanent one in Tennai Watson, who struggled to kick on at the Select Car Leasing Stadium after his initial promise.

The 24-year-old showed a lot of potential in his earlier days in Berkshire, but drew the short straw by having two top-quality right-backs in Andy Yiadom and Chris Gunter in front of him for a good chunk of his Reading career.

That only stifled his career with the Royals and despite not making a huge impact out on loan, Watson will be desperate to play every week and showcase what he can do when given a sufficient opportunity to shine.
