Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk has revealed that left-back Morgan Fox could return to the side for their meeting with Reading on Saturday afternoon, but says midfielder Massimo Luongo is likely to miss out once again through injury.
Fox – who emerged as a key player for Wednesday this season – hasn’t featured for the Owls in any of their last three games through injury, since sustaining a blow in his side’s 2-1 defeat at Wigan at the end of January.
That however, could be about to change, as speaking about Fox’s prospects ahead of that clash with Reading, Monk told Wednesday’s official website: “Hopefully Morgan can be back on Saturday, he’s very close, he’s been big for us this season so we’ll see for the weekend with him.”
There is however less optimistic news on Luongo, who hasn’t featured for the club since being sent off in a 5-0 defeat at home to Blackburn on the 18th January, despite the fact his red card from that game was rescinded.
Discussing the Australian’s current injury situation, Monk continued: “Massimo has a bit of soreness in his calf so is unlikely for the weekend but the rest are fine.”
Wednesday go into the clash with the Royals 12th in the Championship table, nine points adrift of the play-offs, having won just one of their last nine league games.
This very much feels like one good and one bad bit of news for Wednesday.
By all accounts, Fox has been particularly impressive for the Owls this season, so if they can get him back in the starting XI , it should be a welcome boost to a side that will be low on confidence right now following that recent run.
In contrast to that, Luongo’s absence will be a source of disappointment, given he could have helped provide some welcome control in the centre of park for Wednesday, something he appeared to do well earlier in the season.
Indeed, with their recent run of form meaning this looks to be a crucial game in terms of their play-off hopes this season, it certainly feels as though Wednesday will have wanted every possible option at their disposal on Saturday.
