“Missing out on promotion will come at a cost” – Sky Sports presenter issues worrying Bristol City verdict

Michelle Owen has admitted that she is expecting to see some key players depart Ashton Gate this summer, after Bristol City missed out on promotion.

The Sky Sports presenter, writing in her column for the Bristol Post, has admitted she wouldn’t be surprised to see Joe Bryan, Aden Flint, Bobby Reid and Marlon Pack all depart this summer after influential campaigns.

Lee Johnson’s side were flying around Christmas, with automatic promotion in their sights. However, an incredible slump in form post-Christmas has left Bristol City in mid-table and facing another year of Championship football.

There is just one fixture of the Championship season remaining, and with attention turning to the summer, Owen delivered her thoughts on what the upcoming transfer window might bring:

“Missing out on promotion will come at a cost, not just financially but players will inevitably leave.

“Unfortunately, I would not be surprised to see Joe Bryan, Bobby Reid, and Aden Flint depart and possibly Marlon Pack.”

Bryan is already attracting interest ahead of the summer, with Burnley reportedly readying a £6m bid for the left-back.

Whilst that reported fee might not be enough to land Bryan, Owen’s admitted that the lure of Premier League and European football might be too much for Bryan to turn down:

“The Premier League must be so tempting, and Burnley could be playing in Europe too if that offer proves to be true.”

Flint and Pack have produced some impressive performances in defence and midfield over the course of the season, whilst Reid has been one of the Championship’s most prolific goalscorers.

The 25-year-old has scored 21 goals this season, with Owens admitting she is expecting to see the striker attract plenty of interest.

The Verdict

Bristol City have enjoyed a successful year, even though they are going to miss out on play-off football.

There have been a number of impressive individuals at Ashton Gate over the course of the year, and it is hard to not agree with Owens, who is expecting offers to come Bristol City’s way.

The lure of the Premier League could leave to see key departures this summer.
