Reading failed to bring in a new striker on deadline day, despite Jaap Stam's insistence that a big money forward was needed before the window's close.

The Royals were linked with a number of big money strikers across the summer such as Nahki Wells and Tomer Hemed, the latter of which they bid a considerable amount for deadline day.

Nelson Oliveira is another man they took keen interest in, but after an enormous transfer saga that lasted about a month, they couldn't land the Portuguese international, despite their efforts.

Whilst this is extremely disappointing for fans and management alike, it isn't the end of the world.

Reading have had a very decent summer, and their signings have looked good in their initial outings.

The need for a quality forward would have been the cherry on the icing on the cake, but it wasn't absolutely vital to their season.

The Royals have some decent options up front.

Yann Kermorgant is currently injured, but his excellent 2017 form was pivotal to our push into the play-offs last season, and hopefully he can pick up where he left off.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson arrived from Wolverhampton Wanderers, and despite a poor start at QPR he made an excellent impression away at Birmingham where he scored his first Reading goal.

Finally, we have Joseph Mendes.

A big, powerful centre forward, who's extremely clinical in front of goal with his three goals in just a handful of starts from last season.

Reading have decent options up front, and if a new striker has to wait until January or next year, then we can survive comfortably until then.
