Some new managers prefer to all but disregard their first transfer window in charge of the club they have just joined.

Even in the current climate of football where success must be instant, some new bosses prefer to take the time to run the rule over the squad of players they have inherited.

However, new Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka does not fall into that category. He rolled the dice on transfer deadline day, bringing in seven new faces and looking set to recruit another in the shape of Ben Watson.

Six players left the City Ground on 31 January but there are still some faces in the dressing room that can count themselves very lucky to still be at the club after the deadline.

This season looks like one that Karanka can write off - they won't go down and they don't look likely to get into the play-offs but we've taken a closer look at some players who Karanka should have axed before January 31.

David Vaughan

Vaughan is an experienced campaigner and we know that Karanka likes those. However, he has made major moves to bolster his midfield ranks late on in the transfer window, and that looks set to push Vaughan even further down the pecking order.

Adlene Guedioura, who Karanka worked with at Boro and Jack Colback arrived on deadline day to add legs and left-footed quality to the Forest engine room, and it is hard to see what Vaughan offers that they do not.

With Watson also due to join the club at some point in the coming days, it is looking increasingly difficult for Vaughan to get a look in at the City Ground and Karanka really should have moved him on before the transfer window slammed shut.

He has plenty to offer another club and I'd expect him to leave in the summer.

Apostolos Vellios

Vellios started in Forest's 3-0 home thrashing at the hands of Preston North End but it is hard to argue that he is a better option than promising hitman Ben Brereton.

Brereton will need to be rotated and rested from time to time but when Darryl Murphy returns to full fitness, he can fulfill that role, and is a better goalscorer at this level than Vellios.

Karanka was looking around for a striker and I think if he had found one, Vellios would have been shown the door and to be honest, I'm slightly surprised that the former Boro boss didn't do that regardless.

Vellios has done well to survive at Forest for as well as he has but the brave new era at the City Ground that fans will hope results in promotion to the Premier League should have no role for him in it.

Forest fans - do you agree with these selections or are there other players you'd rather Karanka have shown the door to? Let us know in the comments below...
