Goalscoring proved something of an issue for Millwall this season.

The Lions looked a side in desperate need of a consistent striker, with none of their forwards scoring more than five goals and only Jed Wallace making it into double figures.

They scored fewer goals than any of the 10 sides above them in the Championship, which highlights just what they will need to improve on ahead of next season.

The Lions will need to get better at turning draws, of which they had 16 in the Championship last season, into wins if they're to push for a play-off place in the 2021/22 campaign.

We're looking at Millwall goalscorers of old today and have scoured the records to find the oldest players to find the net in their colours.

Here's our list of the south London club's top 10 oldest ever goalscorers, with more than a little help from Transfermarkt...

We start our list with Darren Purse, whose time at the Den was brief.

The centre-back was a Millwall player for just under a year – having arrived from Sheffield Wednesday in January 2011 and leaving to join Plymouth Argyle in January 2012 – and made just 14 appearances for the south London club.

Purse only contributed one goal in his Lions career but it earned him a place on this list.

The defender was 34 years, 2 months, and 9 days old when he scored in the club's 4-0 Championship win against Preston North End at the Den in April 2011.

It should be no surprise to see Paul Moody on this list, given his excellent goalscoring record for Millwall and the stage in his career at which he signed for the club.

Moody spent two years with the south London club, having joined from Fulham in 1999, and scored an impressive 35 goals in 60 appearances during that period.

He was 34 years, 2 months, and 29 days old when he bagged the Lions' only goal in a League Cup defeat to Gillingham at Priestfield in 2001.

Moody would leave to re-join Oxford United not long after he bagged that goal, meaning he was unable to rise any higher on this list.

Another player that wasn't at Millwall for long, Don Hutchison joined on a free transfer from West Ham United in August 2005 and left to join Coventry City less than four months later.

Hutchinson made only 11 appearances for the club before his exit and scored twice, with the second goal earning him a place on this list.

Millwall were beaten 2-1 in the Championship by Preston at Deepdale in September 2001, with Hutchison grabbing an equaliser six minutes after the half.

Unfortunately, Patrick Agyemang scored a 77th-minute winner for the hosts but the game remains part of club folklore as Hutchinson was 34 years, 4 months, and 1 day old when he found the net.

Unlike many of the players on this list, Adrian Williams was not known for his goalscoring exploits.

The Welsh centre-back's loan spell at Millwall was a short one and he made just 12 appearances in total before returning to parent club Coventry City.

Even so, Williams managed to find the net once and it was a memorable goal.

The defender was 34 years, 4 months, and 22 days old when he scored the opener against the Toffees – earning himself place on this list and the Lions a FA Cup third round replay at Goodison Park.

They would lose that game 1-0 but that takes nothing away from Williams' goal.

Derek McInnes may be familiar now as the recently departed Aberdeen manager but he was once a gritty defensive midfielder.

His time at Millwall came very late in his career, having signed for the south London club in 2006 after an agreement was reached with Dundee United to see him released from his contract.

McInnes wasn't at the club long but certainly made an impact – with manager Nigel Spackman giving him the captain's armband.

His only goal came in a 3-2 League One defeat to Cheltenham Town at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium, while he was 35 years, 1 month, and 21 days old.

It feels only right that Steve Morison is on this list, given his phenomenal service for the club even into his later years.

Morison was 35 years, 1 month, and 24 days old when he bagged the last of his 92 goals for the south London club.

The forward came off the bench in the second half to grab the winner in a 2-1 comeback victory against Wigan Athletic in 2018, with Shaun Williams grabbing the other after Jed Wallace's own goal in first half injury time.

That was Morison's only Championship goal of the 2018/19 season and he left the following summer to join Shrewsbury Town.

Millwall may have got Ricardo Fuller in the twilight of his career but the centre-forward still proved a useful addition, having joined from Blackpool in 2014.

In all, Fuller found the net six times for the Lions in the 2014/15 campaign before leaving to join Oldham Athletic in the summer.

The last of those came at the age of 35 years and 3 months old and helped Millwall claim a 1-0 win against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground in January 2015.

That would also prove Fuller's last goal in EFL football, though he has found the net for non-league sides Nantwich Town and Hanley Town since coming out of retirement in 2019.

Though he was unable to recreate the stunning form he'd shown at points for Ipswich Town, Carlos Edwards was a useful addition to the squad when Millwall signed him – first on loan and then on a free transfer – in 2014.

For the most part, he was unable to contribute in the final third for the Lions as he had at previous clubs but he did find the net once for them.

Edwards was 35 years, 5 months, and 15 days old when he scored in the club's 1-0 win against Wigan in the Championship.

That goal would prove his last for the Lions and his last in the EFL.

There can surely be no argument that signing Steve Claridge ahead of the 2001/02 season was a shrewd bit of business from Millwall.

He found the net 27 times in 87 appearances, with his debut season particularly impressive as it saw him find the net 17 times.

The centre-forward's final goal for the game came the following year, however, and saw him grab an equaliser against Southampton in an FA Cup tie at St Mary's in January.

Claridge was 36 years, 9 months, and 15 days old at the time – putting him number two on our list.

There was only ever one player that was going to feature at the top of our list, wasn't there!?

Dennis Wise is the oldest goalscorer in Millwall's history, according to Transfermarkt, having found the net at the age of 38 years, 1 month, and 6 days.

That goal came during his spell as player-manager, though, unfortunately, his side were unable to avoid a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Wolves.

Wise's penalty at The Den in that game in January 2005 would prove to be his final goal for the club as he left to join Southampton later that year.
