Millwall midfielder Billy Mitchell has committed his long-term future to the club by putting pen to paper on a fresh deal, the club has confirmed.

Mitchell has become recognised as one of Millwall's brightest young prospects following his senior debut at the end of last season, and his six outings in the 2019/20 season have clearly been enough to convince the Lions to hand him an extended contract at The Den.

The 18-year-old was only handed his first professional contract over the summer following his first-team debut, but Millwall have already decided to renew these terms following his three appearances from the start in the EFL Cup and FA Cup this term.

Millwall boss Gary Rowett has also handed Mitchell two brief cameo appearances in the Championship this season, with his most recent outing during the 2-0 victory over Reading in January while he was last named on the bench against Birmingham in February.

The length of Mitchell's new long-term contract has not been specified by the club, but the midfielder is said to be delighted with his new deal having climbed through the Lion's ranks since Under-15 level.

The Verdict

It will come as excellent news to Millwall fans that the club has been able to tie down Mitchell on a long-term deal, with the midfielder having clearly impressed Rowett in recent months despite only making four first-team appearances under the new boss.

Millwall should now look to give more playing time to Mitchell during the closing weeks of the season following this news, particularly if the Lions fail to maintain their play-off push and there is little to play for in the final matches of the campaign.

It should then be expected for Mitchell to become a more central figure within the first-team fold next campaign, with this seeming even more likely if the Lions do not land Brighton midfielder Jayson Molumby on a permanent deal following his loan stint this term.
