Millwall defender Jake Cooper has said that his side were 'over-confident' in their 2-2 draw with Wigan Athletic in the Championship on Tuesday night.

Gary Rowett's side moved into the top ten of the Championship for the visit of Wigan on Tuesday, but were behind after three-minutes thanks to a goal from Anthony Pilkington.

Shaun Hutchinson equalised with his third goal of the season but after the restart, Wigan had the lead once again through Antonee Robinson.

With half-an-hour remaining, Matt Smith came off the bench to score the equaliser - Rowett's now taken ten points from his first five games in charge, losing once.

Speaking to London News Online about Tuesday's fixture, Jake Cooper said:

“It was a poor start. The mentality was maybe a little bit not perfect after the win on Saturday.

“We were a bit over-confident, you could say. We didn’t do the little things as well as we normally do. You need to come out and perform to the best of your ability in every game in this league."

Wigan fell into the relegation zone with Luton beating Charlton 2-1, but ended a run of three-straight losses at Millwall.

“Wigan went out there and did the little things a bit better than us, admitted Cooper. "They made it tough for us – they played direct. Maybe they’ve had something to prove. They’ve given away a few late goals and they went for it, putting two strikers up against us. Credit to them.

“They probably deserved it a little more than we did but we’re proud of the fact we could come back twice and get a point to keep our confidence high going into the game on Saturday.”

Millwall are now in 12th-place and will this weekend travel to a former suitor of Rowett's, Birmingham City. Rowett spent over two-years at the club between 2014 and 2016, overseeing 106 games in charge before being sacked by new owners - Birmingham were in 7th at the time of his sacking.

The verdict

Millwall were flying-high after their win away at Swansea City at the weekend and were perhaps 'over-confident' for the visit of Wigan.

They have a chance to rectify the draw though and it'll be a day of emotions for Rowett returning to St Andrews. Pep Clotet's Blues are 15th in the Championship, and will look to end a winless run of four against Millwall on Saturday.
