Millwall are set to start negotiations with defender Byron Webster over a new contract, according to News Shopper.

Webster's current deal at Millwall expires at the end of the season and he will be leaving the club on a free transfer unless a new contract can be sorted.

The 31-year-old, who stands at 6ft 4in, joined Millwall in 2014 and has played nearly 150 times for the South London outfit.

But the former Northampton Town and Yeovil Town defender has been limited to just 12 matches this season after suffering a season-ending ACL injury in September.

In his absence, centre-back pair Shaun Hutchinson and Jake Cooper have formed one of the most formidable solid partnerships in the division.

Millwall manager Neil Harris revealed: “We've got very few players in the first-team that are out of contract - obviously Byron is one of them.

“I’ve spoken to his agent and to Byron as well, his progression this year and the way he’s handled his recovery from injury has been hugely impressive."

With Championship football now looking likely after back-to-back wins all but ended Millwall's dreams of a play-off place, Harris is looking to wrap up his out-of-contract players and keep his star performers ahead of another promotion challenge next year.

The Verdict

While Hutchinson and Cooper will remain as the first-choice pairing for next season - provided they stay - Webster will be a good back-up option to have. Harris needs strength in depth in his squad and should either Hutchinson or Cooper get injured, Webster will be waiting in the wings. After a frustrating season, the 31-year-old will be desperate to get back to his best and prove he is worthy of a new contract offer.
