After earlier confirming that midfielder Shaun Williams has signed a new contract with the club, Millwall have now announced that 29-year-old centre back Shaun Hutchinson has also followed suit by committing his future to the Lions after signing a new long-term deal.

The former Motherwell man has been ever present for the Lions since arriving from London rivals Fulham back in the summer of 2016, with the Newcastle born defender making a total of 119 appearances for the New Den outfit.

Hutchinson's partnership with Jake Cooper has been one of the highlights of Millwall's recent rise to within two points of the play-off spots under Gary Rowett, with the pair having only conceded 32 goals between them so far.

The 29-year-old also previously formed a crucial part of the club's play-off winning League One squad back in the 2016/2017 season under Neil Harris.

In more recent times, Hutchinson has 18 appearances for the Lions this term, whilst he has also made an impact for his side offensively, finding the net three times so far.

The Verdict

This represents a great bit of business for Millwall and Gary Rowett as it helps to secure one of their more key players to a new long-term contract, whilst also signalling a real statement of intent.

Hutchinson has established himself as one of the most reliable centre backs in the Championship after what was a slow start to his time at the New Den and the 29-year-old will no doubt be seeking to continue his good form as the Lions seek to break into the race for the play-offs.

The news of two key players signing new contracts will only act as a positive sign for potential new signings this month, with the Lions still yet to bring any new players through the door aside from the permanent addition of Bartosz Bialkowski.

Only time will tell if Millwall will secure some new additions this month, with Rowett currently having just a threadbare selection of players to select from at present.
