Millwall striker Matt Smith has said that Gary Rowett's has been a 'breathe of fresh air' at the club, since his appointment last month.

After four years and nearly 250 games in charge of Millwall, Neil Harris stepped down from his manager's position last month and was replaced by former Birmingham, Derby and Stoke manager Gary Rowett.

He's since taken charge of three games for his new club and winning two, the last against Charlton when Matt Smith came off the bench to score an injury-time winner.

Speaking to News at Den today about the impact that Rowett has made so far, Smith said:

"The manager has been a breath of fresh air, training has had a real intensity to it, he has a superb track record in the division, so as far as an appointment goes, it has been a fantastic one and the results have been really positive."

Rowett's only loss came against Reading earlier this month, with Mark Bowen's Royals coming out 2-1 victors after a fine first-half display at the Madejski.

"Bar the first-half at Reading, it has been a really positive start," added Smith. "The lads have taken on board everything he is getting across to us and hopefully we can carry that forward and stride to have a positive season and march up the table."

Millwall resume their Championship campaign with a trip to Swansea City this weekend, as the Lions look to improve on their 15th-place standing with a win in South Wales.

The verdict

Rowett's appointment was met with a few groans from fans but he's quickly silenced any doubters with a fine start to his tenure.

Smith has been an important part of Millwall's season so far and has chipped in with some important goals already, despite not yet starting under Rowett.

Swansea pose a tough test for Millwall on the road, and they'll need to give it everything they have to get anything from the game - it'll surely be an exciting one, and another win for Rowett would be a big achievement.
