Millwall forward Oli Burke has claimed beating former club West Bromwich Albion at The Den earlier this month was "sweet" and revealed that Gary Rowett's continued interest in him convinced him to join in January.

The 24-year-old limped off with a hamstring issue in the 2-0 victory against QPR on Tuesday night and it is yet uncertain how serious that will be but losing him would be a blow as he has been a regular fixture in Rowett's side since joining on loan from Sheffield United last month.

Burke has bounced around a number of different clubs and struggled to really settle anywhere in his short career so far but looked to be enjoying his football with Millwall ahead of last night's setback.

In the club programme for the game against QPR, the forward earmarked the win against the Baggies as a highlight of his time at Millwall so far.

He said: "The West Brom game – my former club – that was sweet, getting a win over them, especially at The Den."

The forward's time at Albion was particularly frustrating for both the club and the player, with £15 million spent to bring him to The Hawthorns and just 24 appearances made over three years on their books.

It seems he feels a lot more wanted in south London and he revealed that it was Rowett's persistent interest in him that convinced him to make the move.

Burke said: "I know that the gaffer has always tried to get me on board at the clubs he has been at. It's nice to be wanted and for a manager to be very keen on you is nice.

"Sometimes you can make a transfer and the manager doesn't know much, if anything, about it, so that was a key part of me coming here."

The Verdict

While West Brom supporters would likely put the blame on Burke's shoulders, you can understand why his time at Albion must've been very frustrating and why he enjoyed the win over the Baggies so much.

The forward has seemed to be really enjoying his football under Rowett at The Den and you'd hope that the hamstring issue he picked up last night is not a major setback.

For a player with so much raw ability and potential, the 24-year-old's career has been a disappointing one so far and what he surely needs right now is to settle into regular football at one club.

There have been early signs are that Millwall could be the right place to do that but it remains to be seen whether things will fall into place to allow that to happen.
