Millwall player comments on prospect of fresh Lions agreement

Millwall defender Murray Wallace says he is not thinking about the prospect of signing a new contract with the club, with his main focus being on re-establishing himself as a regular feature in the club’s starting lineup.

Wallace’s contract at The Den is set to expire at the end of this season, meaning he could be free to leave the club for nothing at the end of this season.

That however, appears not to be playing on his mind too much right now, and having started just two of the Lions’ seven league games this season, it seems earning a regular starting spot in Gary Rowett’s side is a more pressing priority for the 27-year-old.

Speaking to News at Den about the situation surrounding his contract, Wallace said: “First and foremost I’m just concentrating on starting every week, doing the best I can and seeing where it takes me.

“I don’t really have many thoughts about my contract at the minute.”

Since joining Millwall from Scunthorpe in the summer of 2018, Wallace has made a total of 82 appearances in all competitions for the Championship club, scoring four goals during that time.

The Verdict

It could be a case of one thing following another for Wallace and Millwall here.

If the defender is able to start games regularly for the club throughout the rest of this season, the chance is he will prove his to the side, and boost his chances of earning a new deal at The Den.

However, the arrival of Scott Malone during the summer does seem to have made doing that harder for Wallace, although the fact that Malone is only on loan from Derby, means that an opportunity could still emerge for Wallace if and when Malone returns to Pride Park.

You also feel that the hectic schedule this season, and the subsequent potential need for rotation, could help Wallace’s first-team chances going forward.
