Manager Neil Harris has denied that there is any chance of Millwall signing midfielder Ben Marshall for a third time, following speculation of a return to the Den for the Scot.

Marshall has been a Millwall player twice before, spending the second half of the 2017/18 and 2018/19 campaigns on loan from at the club.

Having been a Wolves player when he was first loaned to Millwall, Marshall's second spell at the club came after a difficult start to his time at Norwich last season, and after the 28-year-old was not given a squad number by the newly promoted Canaries for next season, leading to speculation that he could be set for another return to Millwall.

Harris however does not believe that will happen, as he told the South London Press: “I’m happy to talk about Ben because he has played for us twice.

“He is not a player we’re looking to bring back this summer.

“I know social media has run amok with rumours."

The Millwall boss did however admit that he can understand where certain rumours come from, as he added: “With some of the players linked there might be a natural link or it be players who have spent time with us previously and people put two and two together.

“Some of it there is a little bit of substance – we have spoken to agents and then agents leak things."

In total, Marshall made 32 appearances and scored four goals in all competitions across the course of his two spells at Millwall.

The verdict

I think ruling out a return to Millwall for Marshall is probably the right thing for Harris to do.

The midfielder just didn't have the same impact second time round as he did during his first spell at The Den, and you feel the club is going to need something more than that if they are to avoid another relegation battle.

With Norwich now having won promotion to the Premier League, you imagine that the wages Millwall would have to pay Marshall would not be cheap either, potentially affecting some of their other plans for the summer transfer window.

You feel therefore that despite the obvious connection between the two parties, this is the right thing for Millwall to do.
