Millwall striker Steve Morison has joined Shrewsbury Town on loan for the duration of next season, the club has confirmed.

The 35-year-old still has one year remaining on his Lions contract, but the club captain has now made a temporary switch to the League One outfit.

Morison has established himself as a club legend at the New Den, having scored 92 goals in 335 appearances since first joining the club from Stevenage in 2009.

The move comes after the former Welsh international made 41 Championship appearances for Neil Harris' side last season, but he failed to nail down a regular starting place in the side.

On completing the move, Morison spoke of his sadness at leaving the club but he said he was keen to link up with former Welsh teammate Sam Ricketts at Town.

"It was a sad day to leave Millwall," Morison told the BBC.

"However, I wanted to join what Sam Ricketts is doing here. The opportunity has come up here and he's been well backed by the chairman."

Ricketts was appointed Shrewsbury boss back in December, and he guided his new side to League One safety last season by sealing an 18th-placed finish.

The Verdict

This will be a big loss for Millwall, as Morison is undoubtedly one of the club's most experienced and dedicated players. It also seems strange to the Lions to loan Morison out given that they are already short on players.

However, his goalscoring record was poor last season as he only managed one goal, and I don't blame Harris for wanting to go down a different route in the make-up of his side's strike force.

On the other hand, this is a solid signing for Shrewsbury at League One level and it shows the calibre of player that Ricketts is able to attract to the club.

Morison is not getting any younger so there is no guarantee he will play regularly, but his mere presence in the dressing room will inevitably give Town a boost.
