Matt Smith came off the bench to score the equaliser for Millwall last night, as they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Wigan Athletic in the Championship.

Moving into the top ten ahead of last night's game at The Den, Millwall were behind after three minutes.

Anthony Pilkington fired the visiting Wigan into an early lead which last twenty minutes before Shaun Hutchinson notched his third goal of the season.

After the restart, Wigan were back in-front. Antonee Robinson scored ten minutes into the second-half but five minutes later, Gary Rowett's half-time substitute Matt Smith headed home his fifth goal of the season and the equaliser for the home side.

It was a typical goal from Smith, who rose above the helpless Wigan defence to head home Shaun Williams cross, and it's the second time in three games that Smith has come on from the bench and scored for the Lions.

He said publicly after scoring the winner against Charlton earlier in the month that he didn't want to be a 'super-sub' under Rowett and having been brought on with just five minutes to go at Charlton, Smith was given the whole of the second-half against Wigan.

It might show Rowett's growing trust in the striker as his main number nine, and with two goals in the Rowett era and five for the season, Smith is really pushing for his first start under the former Stoke City boss.

Since Rowett took over at The Den late last month, Smith has played less than 90-minutes of football having been a regular starter up-front under previous manager Neil Harris.

All Smith can do is produce when asked too and he keeps on doing that. His attributes, strength and aerial presence, make him the ideal substitute in many scenarios, but is he good enough to start for Millwall?

He's certainly putting himself in a good position to do so and with the fixtures coming thick and fast over the next few weeks, Rowett may well rotate his forwards and give Smith the starting spot he wants.
