Millwall have approached Wycombe Wanderers over hiring their manager Gareth Ainsworth, according to Sky Sports.

It's said that the Championship club made their move for the 46-year-old over the weekend and have spoken to Wycombe about any potential compensation.

It has been a busy time for Ainsworth, after he had been approached by Sunderland last week, but the Black Cats have seemingly turned their attentions elsewhere.

Ainsworth has been a major success in Buckinghamshire and has guided the Chairboys expertly as they currently sit second in League One after seven years in charge of the club.

Millwall's Neil Harris resigned over a week ago, and the Lions have been on the search for a new boss with Gary Rowett being linked to the managerial job as well.

Adam Barrett has taken over as caretaker in the meantime, with the 39-year-old guiding Millwall to a 2-1 victory over Marcelo Bielsa's highly-rated Leeds United.

The Verdict

This would be quite the coup for Millwall, with many clubs seemingly linked with the highly-rated Football League manager.

Ainsworth has so much experience, and what he has built at Wycombe has been nothing short of remarkable. He deserves an opportunity at a Championship club, although his side currently sit second in League One, so maybe he wants to stay and complete the business at the Chairboys.

It would be an appointment that could dent a serious blow in Wycombe's chances of gaining promotion this season, whilst at the same time Millwall supporters would have to give him time, just like they did with Harris.
