Barnsley have rejected a seven-figure bid from Millwall to sign captain Alex Mowatt, according to Football Insider.

The midfielder has been in outstanding form for the Tykes this season, scoring four times in 27 appearances to help the Oakwell outfit propel towards an unlikely top-six charge.

However, Mowatt's deal with Barnsley expires at the end of the season, meaning he'll be available to sign on a free transfer this summer.

Mowatt has recently been linked to the likes of Middlesbrough, Cardiff and Queens Park Rangers, although Gary Rowett's team have launched a bid between £1million and £1.2million for the midfield man, but Barnsley are looking for around £1.2-£1.5million and have therefore rejected the Lions' offer.

Despite his contract situation, Mowatt remains one of the Tykes' key players, and has started all but one of their 24 Championship matches this season.

The Verdict

Let's not get too carried away as Millwall's bid has been rejected, but this would be an absolutely terrific signing for Rowett.

The Lions are massively struggling for goals all over the pitch, and Mowatt would not only bring leadership skills, but some genuine quality and goals to their midfield.

With Billy Mitchell only recently recovering from injury, Shaun Williams' minutes decreased due to his coaching role and Ben Thompson not getting the opportunities, Rowett desperately needs numbers in the midfield area, and I believe that Mowatt would be an outstanding addition to the squad.
