Millwall latest news: Ben Thompson to consider January exit, permanent deal for forward eyed, major injury boost emerges

Millwall have managed to put themselves in a strong position in the Championship table in the last few weeks with them winning three of their last five to currently sit in 9th place.

Gary Rowett’s side missed the chance to move into the top-six though ahead of the international break when they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to ten-man Derby County last time out.

However, despite that, the Lions are still only one point adrift of the top-six and there should still be a lot of optimism over their chances of achieving a play-off finish.

Rowett’s side face a hugely important period in their season over the next few weeks because they will want to continue their recent form and keep in touch with the top-six ahead of the January transfer window.

That window could be a chance for the Lions to add one or two key signings to the squad and also resolve the long-term futures of some of their existing options.

So, with all that in mind, we take a look at all of the latest news that is currently concerning the Lions…

Gary Rowett makes admission over Ben Thompson’s future

The future of Ben Thompson at Millwall seems to have been the subject of transfer speculation in all of the last few windows, with League One Portsmouth consistently linked with a move for the midfielder following the time he spent on loan at Fratton Park during the 2018/19 campaign.

Speaking to London News Online, Rowett has now admitted that he expects Thompson will be considering his options in terms of his future ahead of the January transfer window. That comes with the midfielder’s current deal at The Den set to expire at the end of the campaign.

Thompson has only managed to make one appearance in the Championship and a further three in the League Cup for the Lions so far this season. While he has also not even been included in the matchday squad for 12 of Millwall’s opening 17 matches of the season.

Rowett has therefore conceded that an exit could be likely in January because the midfielder is keen to ensure that he gets more game time in the second half of the campaign.

Rowett confirms Millwall interest in permanent Benik Afobe capture

Millwall were able to secure a return for forward Benik Afobe in the summer with them reuniting him with Rowett after agreeing a season-long loan deal with Stoke City for the striker.

Since his return to the Lions, Afobe has emerged as a key performer for the Lions and the forward has managed to fire home three goals in his 13 Championship appearances so far this term. Whilst the striker is capable of scoring at a higher rate than that his all-round performances have also been enough to make him a key player at The Den.

Rowett has now suggested to News at Den that Millwall would be keen to try and sign Afobe on a permanent deal following his performances during his loan spell so far. That is something that the Lions could therefore try and sort out during the January transfer window.

However, Rowett did concede though that should Afobe go on to enjoy a purple patch of form with Millwall during the rest of the campaign then it could make their chances of signing him permanently becomes less clear.

Daniel Ballard set to provide injury boost for Millwall

Another one of Millwall’s quality loan additions in the summer was Arsenal’s Daniel Ballard and the defender has stepped up to Championship football very well and established himself as a crucial member of Rowett’s defence.

However, Ballard has been suffering with an issue with his knee recently and that has potentially threatened to derail his start to life at Millwall. There were fears that the Lions could have to contend without the defender for their first game back after the international break against Middlesbrough.

However, it has now been reported by News at Den that after having injections in his knee to try and relieve his injury issues, the defender could now potentially be able to make a return to the squad when they take on Middlesbrough as the campaign resumes next week.
