Millwall have submitted a bid for Wycombe Wanderers defender Jason McCarthy, according to Football Insider.

The 23-year-old was a key player for Wycombe in League One last season and has attracted interest from a number of Championship clubs this summer, but Millwall have followed up their interest with a bid.

Millwall boss Neil Harris is keen to strengthen his defensive options before the end of the transfer window and has made McCarthy one of his top transfer targets.

McCarthy joined Wycombe from Barnsley last summer and was an important player last season, making 49 appearances in all competitions.

The defender came through the academy at Southampton and spent time on loan at Wycombe and Walsall, before joining Barnsley on a permanent deal in 2017.

Millwall finished 21st in the Championship table last season, four points above the relegation zone and will start the new campaign with a home game against Preston North End.

The Verdict

McCarthy was an important player for Wycombe last season and I think he could be a good signing for Millwall.

He's a big physical presence on the pitch and is a committed, tough-tackling defender. He can play at right-back or centre-back and is also good at free-kicks, so he would be a very useful option for Harris to have in his side.

On top of that, he's already got some experience in the Championship with Barnsley, so he would not need to adapt too much to the physical demands of the division.

I think he's capable of making an impact in the second tier and Millwall could be a good move for him, as it would allow him to perform without the added pressure of playing for one of the top teams in the league.
