Millwall have been dealt a frustrating injury blow, with London News Online revealing that midfielder Billy Mitchell has suffered a fresh hamstring injury.

Mitchell has been out of action since pre-season, and would have been hoping to challenge for a spot in the first-team before the turn of the New Year.

But the youngster picked up a hamstring injury for the Millwall Under-23s against Wigan on Tuesday, which forced him off at half-time.

It is believed that this latest injury will keep him in the treatment room for eight to ten weeks, which will be a hugely irritating blow for the Lions.

Mitchell caught the eye towards the back end of last year's campaign, and made ten appearances in all competitions for Gary Rowett's side as they finished eighth in the Championship.

Millwall are currently sat ninth in the second-tier standings after their opening 11 matches of the 2020/21 season, and will be eager to push themselves into the top-six heading towards the festive period.

But they'll have to continue to do that without Mitchell, who isn't set to return to the squad until the New Year, which will see him miss the hectic and potentially season-defining festive period.

Millwall are set to return to action this weekend when they take on Cardiff City, in what is certain to be a tricky test up against the Bluebirds.

The Verdict:

This is far from ideal.

I was really impressed with Mitchell last season when he featured for Millwall's first-team, and you would imagine that he would have been confident of retaining his place in the side this term.

But injuries are part of the game, and he comes across as the sort of player that will learn from this and come back an even better player for the Lions.

If he can pick up where he left off, then Millwall will have an excellent young talent on their hands going forward.
