Millwall have endured a tough start to the 2019/20 season, with Neil Harris' side down in 16th place in the table, without a win in five league outings, ahead of the weekend trip to Championship basement club Huddersfield Town.

One player who is starting to make his mark at the Den, is 22-year-old winger Connor Mahoney who moved to south London in the summer after two years at AFC Bournemouth.

So how can Mahoney's start to life at Millwall be best summed up?

We discuss........

Josh Cole

“Since joining Millwall in the summer from AFC Bournemouth, Mahoney has made an encouraging start to life at The Den.

“After marking his debut with an assist against Preston North End, the midfielder has since featured in all of the Lions’ Championship fixtures this season.

“Whilst it is fair to say that Mahoney has struggled somewhat with his consistency, there is no reason why he cannot become a key player for Millwall in the future providing that he can find a solution to this issue.

“With the Lions set to face Huddersfield Town on Saturday, the 22-year-old will be determined to prove his worth to boss Neil Harris by delivering a stand-out display at the John Smith’s Stadium."

Toby Wilding

"I would say it's been a rather mixed start to time at The Den for Mahoney.

"Having featured in every league game and picked up a couple of assists, it does seem as though the winger could have an important part to play for Millwall this season.

"However, I do feel as though he may have been able to offer a more significant all-round threat for Millwall this season, particularly given how impressive he looked to be during his loan at Birmingham last season.

"I watched Millwall in their 2-0 defeat at Blackburn, where Mahoney was perhaps unfortunate not to get his first goal for his new club against one of former ones inside 60 seconds of the match, and I wonder whether putting that chance away would have given the winger an all-important boost to kick on from for the rest of the season."

“I think that Millwall fans would've expected a lot more from him, to be quite honest, as he has been a bit disappointing so far.

“I was really impressed with Mahoney after his loan spell at Birmingham last season, and he enjoyed playing in Monk’s system.

“I thought that Millwall’s system would suit him to a tee – they normally played a flat 4-4-2 with wingers crossing the balls in for the big men up front.

“But they have changed their formation in recent weeks, and Mahoney doesn’t really suit it at all.

“He needs to improve.”
