Millwall have been hit with a number of injuries in recent weeks and they could well look to strengthen when the January transfer opens in less than a month.

Neil Harris had outlined his plans for the new year, revealing he was not expecting any permanent additions to his side, but that could all be about to change.

Tom Bradshaw, Tom Elliott, Lee Gregory, Steve Morison, Shaun Williams and Aiden O’Brien are all out at present through injury, with the latter of the three all taken off in last weekend’s draw with Bristol City.

In light of the injury crisis at The Den, Harris’ plans could well be altered for January with chief executive for the London club Steve Kavanagh explaining the club’s manager has funds available should they be needed.

In an interview with NewsAtDen, Kavanagh issued an update on if the money made from the sale of George Saville in August will be available to bolster a side bereft with injuries.

“There’s always money in the pot for the right player who will improve Neil’s squad, and that Neil wants to take forward.

“Do we have to go and spend money? No, but if the right player is available, and the chairman supports that position, then that will be the case," Kavanagh said.

“January is always a difficult window, but if the right player becomes available that will help take the squad forward and develop the team, then I’m sure the board and the chairman will back that.”

“The situation differs from club to club and the different financial situations,” Kavanagh added.

“That [Saville sale] was a windfall but don’t forget we’ve already beaten our transfer record twice in the summer with Ryan Leonard and Tom Bradshaw. Unfortunately, Tom’s already picked up an injury, which happens.”

Millwall could be without a single recognised striker this weekend when they take on Hull City at The Den in what is set to be a crucial game in the Lions’ season.

The verdict

After this announcement, it seems as if Neil Harris could well have changed his mind about permanent transfers in the new year.

And he would be right to do so, the Lions have been hit with a catalogue of injuries, and it has depleted the team somewhat, especially in forward areas.

Tom Bradshaw is out for the season with an ACL injury, and Aiden O’Brien was stretched off at the weekend, and it looks as if he could be out for a long period, too.

If that is the case, then additions to bolster attacking areas will be imperative during next month.

I feel that it is the right decision to back Harris with the necessary funds should he need them come January.
