Millwall boss Gary Rowett has confirmed to News at Den that forward Mason Bennett picked up an ankle injury in the club's weekend win over Ipswich Town.

The Lions ran out as comfortable 3-0 winners at Portman Road thanks to a brace from Benik Afobe and a Jed Wallace strike, however there will now be some concerns over the fitness of Bennett moving into the first league game of the season.

Bennett came on for Wallace just after the hour mark but was eventually replaced by Tom Bradshaw in the last 10 minutes of the contest after taking a blow to his ankle.

Now Rowett has provided an update on his player ahead of his side's trip to West London next weekend;

"I think Mason just rolls his ankle at the same time so I would anticipate that that's the only negative to today. Until it settles it's hard to say but I would imagine there is a little bit of damage in there so we will find out soon."

The former Derby County man was ever present for the Lions last season and notched up an impressive five goals and two assists in 37 Sky Bet Championship appearances.

The Verdict

Losing Bennett with so little time until the start of the season will be seen as a blow by many at Millwall as the forward has been a breath of fresh air since moving permanently from Derby.

The hope now will be that he isn't out for too long as he is a vital option that Rowett likes to utilise regularly throughout a campaign.

His absence does however mean that there will be another opportunity for someone else in the team to step up to the plate and overall it will be a real test of Millwall's squad depth.

The good news is that Afobe is already firing on all cylinders and the Lions head into their game at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium particularly high on confidence after putting in a good performance at Ipswich.
