Millwall have announced the signing of Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Jayson Molumby on a season-long loan.

The 19-year-old has become the Lions' sixth signing of the summer and will compete for a starting midfield spot alongside the likes of Shaun Williams, Ben Thompson and Ryan Leonard.

Molumby arrives at The Den with high pedigree having impressed within the Seagulls' youth set-up since making the move to the south coast from Ireland in 2015.

His performances have earned him six appearances in the Brighton's senior side under former boss Chris Hughton, while he has also recently been made Ireland U21 captain after making his debut earlier this year.

Molumby now makes the switch to London with just under two weeks until the Lions kick off their Championship campaign, and the midfielder said he can't wait to get started with his new side.

“I’m absolutely over the moon,” Molumby told the club website.

“I would’ve liked to get here a little bit earlier in fact, but I had a little injury to begin with. But now I’m here, I’m buzzing to get going with the season coming along quickly.

“What I wanted coming into the season was to get out on loan, and Millwall seems the perfect fit for me.”

The verdict

This looks to be a really smart signing from Brighton, as Molumby has now gained enough experience to make a sizeable impact within a senior set-up.

The fact he has been made Ireland's U21 captain so soon after making his debut is indicative of his talent and leadership skills, while he also possesses the attacking and defensive versatility to thrive in the Championship.

His comments also suggest that he was extremely keen to link up with the Lions which can only be good news, as he will now be hungry to succeed for the London club.

I think this will be one of the signings to watch this season as it will be interesting to see how Molumby copes with playing at a senior level on a regular basis.
