Murray Wallace is expected to become Millwall's first summer signing, London News Online reports.

Millwall look set to confirm the signing of Wallace this week after triggering the release clause in his Scunthorpe United contract.

Wallace played 45 games for the Iron last season, helping them to reach the play-off spots where they were beaten by eventual winners Rotherham United in the play-off semi-finals.

With Scunthorpe failing to win promotion, Wallace looks set to leave and Millwall are ready to snatch him.

The Lions are looking for reinforcements in defence and the 25-year-old's ability to play as a centre-half or as a left-back appeals to them.

Wallace can provide cover for Shaun Hutchinson and Jake Cooper in central defence, as well as replacing Harry Toffolo as James Meredith's deputy at left-back.

The former Scotland under-21 international is keen to move up to the Championship to test himself at a higher level and enhance his international ambitions of earning a senior call-up.

Wallace started his senior career with Falkirk after a spell in the Rangers academy and he moved down to England in 2012 to join Huddersfield Town.

Having played 60 games for the Terriers, Wallace moved to Scunthorpe and he has made well over 100 appearances for the club since.

The Verdict

Wallace is relatively young, has plenty of experience and he will be hungry to succeed at a higher level.

The versatile defender also has some experience at Championship level with Huddersfield and will be eager to prove that he is good enough to step back up to this level.

As an initial back-up choice with the ability to break into the first-team, Wallace is a shrewd signing for the Lions.
