Millwall are closing in on the signing of Hull City midfielder George Honeyman, according to the South London Press.

The 27-year-old was a reasonably important part of Shota Arveladze's plans last term, recording five goals and five assists in 35 competitive appearances as one of the first names on the teamsheet when available.

He has even been offered a new long-term contract by officials at the MKM Stadium as the Tigers previously looked desperate to keep him in East Yorkshire. However, he is yet to put pen to paper on these fresh terms and an exit has seemingly been sanctioned.

A one-year option was taken up on his contract last month to keep him at the club until next summer, meaning the Lions have had to fork out a transfer fee to land him after already paying £1.7m for Zian Flemming.

Already confirming the arrival of Flemming, Gary Rowett's side would go a long way in addressing their attacking midfield position if they were to recruit Honeyman too with Luke Freeman and Sheyi Ojo's return to their parent clubs leaving a sizeable void in this area.

The Hull man is set to travel to the English capital though and will complete a medical this morning before applying the finishing touches to this deal. He will then link up with his new teammates in Ireland later on today, barring any complications.

The Verdict:

This is a blow for the Tigers because although many would say he isn't the man to take them to the Premier League, he would have been a good squad player to have and is still an important player for Arveladze's side in the present day.

They also missed out on Scott Twine so it will be interesting to see what other irons they have in the fire going into the new season, though Keane Lewis-Potter could potentially fill in there.

However, you just feel the latter would thrive more on the wing and this is why they would benefit from having an orthodox advanced midfielder or two at their disposal before the 2022/23 campaign gets underway.

For the Lions though, the signing of Honeyman is a smart one because he has experience of playing in this division and is a specialist in a position where they needed to add another option.

He can also contribute both in terms of goals and assists, something that will be especially important following the departure of Jed Wallace, with signings like these helping to fill the void the new West Brom man has left.
