Impressive Millwall midfielder Ben Thompson is reportedly set to sign a new long-term deal with the club, according to London News Online

Although it is not yet known how long the new deal will be, Neil Harris has apparently made tying the 23-year-old down to a contract a priority this summer after he played a big role in the Lions' survival during the 2018/19 Championship campaign.

Thompson became a huge hit whilst on loan with League One Portsmouth during the opening half of the season and was recalled to the Den as a result during the January transfer window.

After which he went on to score four goals in 13 appearances as the club scraped to survival in the second-tier, including both goals in a crucial 2-0 win against Birmingham City as well as strikes against Leeds United and Preston.

When the final whistles of the season blew, Harris's side were sat just one place above the drop zone with four points separating them from Rotherham United.

The verdict

Harris is absolutely right to make this a priority.

I have little doubt that there will be interest in Thompson this season so Millwall must tie him down to a new deal as soon as possible.

In a league season with little to smile about Millwall simply must hang onto one of their few shining lights.
