Millwall manager Gary Rowett has heaped the praise on left-back Murray Wallace, stating that the 26-year-old defender has been playing 'really well' for the Lions during his time in charge.

The Glasgow-born defender has featured in all but one of Millwall's 21 games this season, playing in every minute of Rowett's eight games in charge of the side.

Speaking to News at Den, the Lions boss waxed lyrical about Wallace, stating that he has been a key player for the side this season.

“I’ve been really impressed with him since I came in,” the Millwall manager said.

Rowett opted for a 3-4-3 formation against Bristol City last night, with Wallace impressing in the left-wing back position once again.

The defender joined Millwall in June 2018 from Scunthorpe United, originally being suited to playing at the heart of the defence.

However, former boss Neil Harris utilised Wallace as a makeshift left-back during his time in charge, and the Scot has been playing there ever since for the Lions after growing into the role.

“It’s interesting because when I came in a lot of people externally said, ‘he’s just filling in there’. But he’s played really, really well," Rowett added.

“He’s got forward, he’s put balls into the box. He’s joined in and linked up, and he’s defended really well.

I’ve been very impressed with his performances.”

The 26-year-old has played 49 games in total for the SE16 side, scoring four goals.

The Verdict

Murray Wallace's performances for Millwall this season have gone under the radar, but the Scot has shown composure and consistency at left-back, and learning how to adapt as a wing-back for future games will mean he can improve his attacking qualities.

It is a huge vote of confidence in Wallace from Gary Rowett, who may have thought that left-back was a problem position at Millwall prior to his arrival. However, it is clear that he now sees the 26-year-old as the first choice left-sided defender at the club.
