Millwall manager Neil Harris is not going to add to his defensive options before Thursday’s loan deadline.

Shaun Hutchinson is out for the “foreseeable future” with a knee injury picked up before the defeat to Rotherham United last Sunday.

With the Lions’ vice-captain out, Harris is down to two full fit centre-halves, with a third in Byron Webster still looking for match fitness after recovering from a horrific knee injury picked up last September.

Murray Wallace and Jake Cooper are the two who partnered in the Millwall defence in Sunday’s reverse to the Millers.

But with four days left of the loan window, the Lions boss has said he will not dipping into the loan market to bring in a defensive reinforcement after the news of Hutchinson's injury.

Speaking after the Rotherham defeat, Harris told Football.London: “I am really pleased with Jake [Cooper], Murray [Wallace] and Byron [Webster].

We need more results on Hutch, but very, very unlikely we will be in for another centre-half.”

The Verdict

If Shaun Hutchinson were to be out long-term, then a replacement would need to be sought after.

Foreseeable future, however, could be one or two months, and with Byron Webster back to full fitness and Murray Wallace and Jake Cooper both fit, the Lions have the choice of two from three centre-halves.

Not forgetting, that if needed, Shaun Williams can also operate as a defender like he did when he was with MK Dons.

It is smart not to bring in a knee-jerk signing as the loan would dictate the player would be with the club until January.

And when Hutchinson is fit, it could be a waste of two or three months’ wages that could go towards a new player in the New Year.

Harris sticking to what he has is a good move and a calculated one in the hope that Hutchinson is fit within a couple of months.
