‘Mike Ashley, time to get your wallet out now!’ – Newcastle fans react to sealing promotion

The Magpies made certain of an instant return to the top-flight with a comfortable victory at home to mid-table side Preston North End on Monday night.

Newcastle United went into the fixture knowing three points would confirm promotion to the Premier League after just one-year in the second-tier of English football, but Simon Grayson’s Lilywhites stood in the way.

Spanish forward Ayoze Perez opened the scoring inside the first ten minutes as he was able to tuck home from a corner, but their lead didn’t last for long as Jordan Hugill netted on the counter attack.

The hosts got their advantage once again just moments prior to the half-time whistle as Christian Atsu converted from an Aleksandar Mitrović through ball.

Rafa Benitez’s team were given more hope that promotion was on the horizon as Preston’s Paul Gallagher received his marching orders for a deliberate handball inside the box and Matt Ritchie scored from the spot.

Newcastle United weren’t done there as Perez grabbed his second of the evening as the ball deflected off the striker via a Jonjo Shelvey corner.

The 4-1 win for the Tyneside outfit takes them to four points behind league leaders Brighton & Hove Albion but a return to the Premier League is guaranteed with nine points separating them and third-placed Reading with two games of the season remaining.

Here is how Newcastle supporters reacted to the victory and promotion on Twitter after the full-time whistle….
