With Burton Albion and Walsall currently flying high in the third tier of English football, the attention now turns to whether their promotion pushes will continue.

Can Dean Smith lead Walsall to promotion this season?

Burton are top of Sky Bet League One with 22 points from their opening ten matches, including seven wins and just two losses.

Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink's side are running high on confidence after only being promoted into the division four months ago - the highest status in their history.

Walsall manager Dean Smith won the August Manager of the Month for League One after steering his side to the top of the table.

They currently sit just one point behind their Midland neighbours after getting back to winning ways away at Scunthorpe United on Tuesday night.

Already clear of seventh placed Coventry City by five and six points respectively, the question now is whether they can sustain this form and mount a promotion push.

Although their not the highest scoring side in the league, all seven of Burton Albion's victories have come by a single goal margin.

And another victory by the same score line today against another newly-promoted side in Southend United will see the Brewers continue their stunning form at the summit of League One.

The Saddlers, fresh from a run to the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final last season, are very much focused on the league this year, and a goal difference of ten reflects their newly ruthless nature, having netted 16 times already this season.

A key component of that has been Smith's ability to keep hold of star striker Tom Bradshaw who has already managed eight goals in all competitions, and if he continues to maintain this early season form then the Saddlers will continue to score the goals necessary to mount a promotion push.

He will be hoping to spearhead Walsall to back-to-back away wins when they face Wigan Athletic and ex-goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell at the DW Stadium this afternoon.

One thing is for sure, whether Burton or Walsall get promoted this season, the signs are encouraging for the Midlands clubs.
