Aston Villa outcast Jordan Lyden has revealed he's playing for a new deal at Villa Park, despite being on loan at League Two side Oldham Athletic.

The Latics are struggling in the lower reaches of the basement division, with 22-year-old Lyden desperate to get his career back on track. He's made four Premier League appearances for Villa, seven outings in total, but has fallen by the wayside in recent seasons.

He's now hoping his spell at Boundary Park can resurrect his once-promising career and he's been told that if he does impress, he might be rewarded.

“It’s really opened my eyes because it is my first loan spell away from Villa," he told the Oldham Chronicle. “Obviously picking up the injury so soon after I arrived was disappointing, but the lads are great here and they’ve helped me settle in."

Whilst he's eager to stay and help push Frankie Bunn's side up the table, he also has one eye on his long-term future.

“For me personally, I just need game time now. Villa have told me that if I get game time here, then we can talk about a new contract when I go back.

"I’d like to stay here for the season, get Oldham promoted and then hopefully I can push on back at Villa from there.”

The Australian midfielder moved to England as a 16-year old, joining up with Aston Villa where his early form was impressive. He made four appearances in the top flight in 2015/16, three of those starts, but has since struggled to push on.

He's made three appearances for Oldham, one start in League Two and one in the Checkatrade Trophy, with his most recent outing coming as a late sub in the 3-2 loss against Stevenage.

The Verdict

Oldham seemed a big drop for the player, League One might have been a better move but he's at Boundary Park and has to make the best of it.

The club is in chaos at the moment and they've fallen down the table, so Lyden will need all his experience and ability to make an impression during his loan spell.
