James Morrison is training with West Bromwich Albion as he tries to land a contract extension, The Express and Star reports.

The midfielder's contract expired at the end of June but he will train with the club as he hopes to prove his fitness to Darren Moore and earn himself a new deal.

Middlesbrough have also been linked with a move for their former academy product, who played nearly 100 games in total for the club before his 2007 switch to West Brom.

In his 11 seasons with the Baggies, Morrison has played well over 300 games but only managed to feature six times in total last season due to a long-term Achilles injury.

The 32-year-old did not travel with the squad to Portugal but has been stepping up his rehabilitation in Walsall as he aims to prove that he has fully recovered from his injury and that he can play a part in West Brom's promotion push next season.

The 46-cap Scotland international will now work on trying to impress Moore - who wants to keep him if he is fully fit - and earn himself an extension.

The Verdict

If Morrison is fully fit, this is a no-brainer for West Brom and he seems dedicated to helping the team get back on track.

His talent on the ball would be a valuable asset at Championship level.

He would also be a decent risk for Boro to take as he would add experience and versatility to their midfield in an environment with which he is very familiar.
