Middlesbrough travel to Wigan Athletic this evening looking for their first league win since New Year's Day.

Boro have not won a game since they claimed all three points in four consecutive victories over the festive period, including impressive wins at West Bromwich Albion and Preston North End.

Despite no wins in five league games Boro remain seven points clear of the Championship drop-zone, and whilst Wigan have enjoyed a mini-resurgence in recent weeks, Woodgate is confident his side will try to win the game.

However, although Wigan still occupy a place in the Championship relegation zone, Woodgate is wary that his side will face a difficult game this evening.

Speaking to the club's media channels on Tuesday, Woodgate said: "We’ll go to try and win the game, but they’re a decent team and they’ve had some good results of late.

"Okay, against Preston they got beat but he (Paul Cook) has got them playing some decent football," Woodgate continued. "Especially with Kieffer Moore up front, he’s a difficult player to play against so we’ll need to be at it.

"Jamal Lowe as well, he’s another good player," the former defender added. "They’ve got those two who can win games at the drop of a hat, so we’ll need to be right at it, it's important we don't lose the game."

Boro had moved 10 points clear of the relegation zone following the 2-0 win at Preston on New Year's Day, but the recent run of just three points in their last 15 games means they aren't out of danger just yet.

Tonight's game with Wigan could have huge bearings on Boro's season, with a defeat potentially dragging them within just four points of the bottom three.

The Verdict

It has come across this season that Woodgate is very frank in interviews and when assessing his side's performances, and he certainly didn't beat around the bush in this latest interview.

Wigan have enjoyed a mini resurgence as of late, winning two of their last three games to pull themselves within four points of safety, and will make life difficult for Boro at the DW Stadium this evening.

Boro were arguably unlucky not to get a draw down at Brentford at the weekend, and Jonathan Woodgate will be hoping his side can pick up a vital three points in what will be a tough encounter.
