Middlesbrough have been linked with a host of top goalkeeping targets in recent weeks, and new boss Garry Monk appears to have searched high and low before settling on the man he wants between the sticks next season.

Sam Johnstone and Karl Darlow had been touted for a Riverside move, but it is now looking likely that Monk has identified West Ham United’s Darren Randolph as his new number one ahead of next month’s opener at big spending Wolves.

The 6 ft 3 in Irish goalkeeper has been with the Hammers since 2015, and has fought with Spaniard Adrian for the starting spot at the club throughout his spell at the club.

With the arrival of England man Joe Hart on a season long loan deal, Randolph has become surplus to requirements at the London Stadium, and Middlesbrough appear more than happy to take the 30-year-old to the north east this summer.

Randolph is an impressive shot stopper, and although his chances have been relatively limited since joining from Birmingham, the player has impressed when presented with the opportunity by boss Slaven Bilic.

At Championship level Randolph will thrive, and is young enough to tie down the number one jersey on Teesside for a number of years to come.

The acquisition of Randolph to put an end to Middlesbrough’s goalkeeper search would mark a shrewd end to proceedings by Monk, and tying up a deal in the next few days should be the former Leeds boss’ top priority.
