Since joining Middlesbrough on loan this summer, Ryan Giles has impressed by putting in some strong performances for his new side.

However, Saturday didn't quite go to plan for the 22-year-old as he scored an own goal to put Sheffield United 2-1 up.

Giles wasn't under pressure at the time but a mistimed clearance saw him put the ball into his own net.

Boro did manage to get a goal back and come away from the game with a point but the Wolves loanee was unsurprisingly disappointed with his mistake.

Nevertheless, a drinks break shortly after the goal gave manager Chris Wilder a chance to talk to him and when asked what was said, the boss told Teesside Live: "I said to him, it was a fabulous finish, he gave Zack no chance! For me, my only criticism, he told 25,000 people that he'd scored an own goal. When he came walking over he was chucking his arms up in the air.

"Get on with it! That has to be the attitude, he's a young boy and he's going to make mistakes, but he's got to get over it. He ain't going to get any sympathy from me, or anything from the likes of Lenihan or anyone else. You've made a mistake mate.

"I think his reaction was brilliant though. Once I got hold of him and said stop telling everyone you've made a mistake. We all know it's you but you can't go hiding. Nobody is going to give you sympathy and you've got to come through it, I thought he did.

"He got on the ball, and he's a great outlet for us and he has that ability to open it up for us. That always has been a big thing for me. You can't go and win games of football, especially when you're playing against the likes of Sheffield United, with only nine or ten players. So if we had one player that went under, it makes it doubly difficult."

The Verdict:

It's understandable why Giles was disappointed with his own goal at the weekend and considering he's still a young player, he was bound to feel as though he had made a big mistake.

However, Wilder's attitude that it didn't matter was exactly what the player needed to lift his head up and play the rest of the game with confidence trying to make a positive difference.

Giles has been a strong player since arriving at The Riverside Stadium and by carrying on the game with confidence, he was able to show that further rather than letting his head drop.

This is a sign of Wilder's strong man management at Boro as he allowed his player to overcome his mistake and finish the game well.
