Middlesbrough are reportedly planning a move for Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney.

The 23-year-old has been prolific this season, scoring 10 goals in 13 appearances in League One–making him the joint-highest scorer in the EFL alongside teammate Mo Eisa.

Toney was hugely impressive for the Posh last season as well–grabbing 23 goals and seven assists in 54 appearances–and appears to have carried that form into the 2019/20 campaign.

His form since joining the League One side appears to have turned some heads at the Riverside, as, according to Football Insider, Boro boss Jonathan Woodgate is interested in adding attacking reinforcements when the transfer window opens in the new year.

The report suggests that having helped Peterborough climb to third in League One, Toney features high up on the North East club's wanted list.

Woodgate joined Boro in the summer and claimed he wanted to bring attacking football back to the Riverside.

So far, that hasn't worked out for him, as only two sides have scored less than Boro in the Championship this season.

The Teessiders have struggled at the start of the season and currently sit 21st in the table, just one place and one point above the relegation places.

They face 20th-place Huddersfield Town this evening, knowing that defeat would see them slip into the drop zone.

The Verdict

Toney has been hugely impressive this season and you feel it is only a matter of time until he is snapped up by a Championship club.

Signing him in January would certainly add some more attacking quality of Woodgate's side and it would be interesting to see how the Boro boss would look to accommodate both Toney and Britt Assombalonga.

At 23, Toney looks like a player that is only going to improve, so it could be a signing that pays dividends for the club for years to come.
