Middlesbrough have had a bid rejected for Charlton right-back Anfernee Dijksteel as Jonathan Woodgate looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the new season.

The full-back position has been something of an issue for Boro this pre-season, with midfielder Jonny Howson filling in on occasions over the past few weeks.

Therefore, finding a right-back has to be a priority for the former England international before the window shuts and it appears that Dijksteel is a target.

That's after Football Insider claimed that the Addicks rejected an offer for the 22-year-old from the Teesside outfit.

However, that might not be the end of the matter as the report states the Dutchman has been monitored for a long time by Boro and he is one of their main targets this summer.

As well as that, Dijksteel is entering the final year of his contract with the Londoners, who are trying to tie him down to a longer deal.

But, a failure to agree on new terms could see Lee Bowyer's side cashing in on the player instead of letting his contract run down.

The Verdict

Boro fans will be encouraged by the fact they have made a move for a right-back and although the initial bid has been turned down, they will still feel they have a chance of landing the player.

In terms of his ability, Dijksteel is exactly what they need. He is aggressive in the way he plays and will give the side a real outlet doing forward.

With Woodgate trying to change the style of play at the Riverside, attacking full-backs will be needed and he fits the bill.

Now, it's about making a suitable offer as there is no way Charlton won't sell for the right price given his contract situation.
