Middlesbrough have been dealt a blow in their quest to sign Sheyi Ojo from Liverpool, with Newcastle United preparing a £10m offer, according to the Sun.

It looked like Boro were set to win the race to sign the promising youngster on-loan last week, but Newcastle’s latest move could put Garry Monk’s side out of the running.

The offer of regular football at Boro was a big attraction for Ojo, but Newcastle’s proposed multi-million pound bid could play a significant role in where the 20-year-old ends up next season.

Monk is looking to bolster his Boro squad ahead of their return to the Sky Bet Championship, and has already been active in the summer transfer market, making three signings.

Jonny Howson and Cyrus Christie arrived from Norwich City and Derby County respectively, whilst Martin Braithwaite was brought in from Toulouse for a reported £9m towards the end of last week.

Monk’s transfer dealings look set to continue in the coming weeks, with Britt Assombalonga remaining on the 38-year-old’s radar.

Recent reports in The Sun have suggested that Monk and Boro are willing to pay £14m for the Nottingham Forest striker, offering him a wage of £60k-a-week.
