According to the Northern Echo, Middlesbrough have made a fresh approach for Keiren Westwood, offering Sheffield Wednesday £4.5m for the goalkeeper’s service.

Garry Monk is desperate to add a goalkeeper to his Boro squad this summer after the departures of Brad Guzan and Victor Valdes, and now looks set to step up his interest in Westwood.

Boro have already had a bid rejected for the Irishman, and having seen their attempts to sign Karl Darlow and Sam Johnstone also turned down, the Teessiders have upped their interest in Westwood, offering the goalkeeper a lucrative four-year contract.

Wednesday are reluctant to let the goalkeeper leave for less than £5.5m, as he still has two years remaining on his contract at Hillsborough.

Since linking up with the Owls in 2014, Westwood has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Sky Bet Championship, making 125 appearances for the South Yorkshire outfit.

The 32-year old has also helped Wednesday to back-to-back play-off appearances, yet despite the club’s success, he has not been able to end their wait for a Premier League return.

Westwood was part of Carlos Carvalhal’s side that went up against Huddersfield Town in last season’s play-off semi-final, but could not prevent the Owls suffering a penalty shootout defeat to their Yorkshire rivals.
