Hayden Coulson has named Andy Robertson and Gareth Bale as his football idols.
The full-back has been a real success for Middlesbrough so far this term due to his strong defensive displays and his pace and energy moving forward.
While injuries have been a bit of an issue, the 21-year-old is already establishing himself as a fans’ favourite with his performance.
Supporter love to be perched on the edge of their seat and it’s no surprise that Coulson can do that given the role models that he’s idolised growing up.
Quizzed by Teesside Live on his role model, Coulson says: “I love going forward so I’d probably say (Gareth) Bale, maybe. I liked him when he was a full-back and obviously he moved on to be a winger. I love going forward to be honest.”
Asked whether the trend of using advanced full-backs has helped him, Coulson said: “That’s definitely the case, especially the way Liverpool play, their formation and the way they press.
“We have watched a few clips of them to try and kind of copy what they do, especially pressing. Robertson is a fantastic player, isn’t he. All those assists…!”
There’s no doubting that Hayden Coulson could be a big player for Middlesbrough this term.
The full-back has been one of the season’s few success stories so far, with his dynamic displays on the left flank not going unnoticed.
The hope now is that he can stay fit in order to make the position his own in the coming weeks and months.
