Middlesbrough ended a 10-game winless run as they recorded a 1-0 victory over Barnsley.

The clash was low on quality and was exactly the sort of dour affair that you'd expect from two sides scrapping at the bottom end of the table.

But the Teessiders won't care.

Victory over the Tykes ended a 10-match winless run for Jonathan Woodgate's who will breathe a sigh of relief after finally ending that miserable run.

Of course they'll come across more difficult challenges as the season unfolds, but all that mattered on the night was the three points.

Britt Assombalonga had an excellent opportunity to open the scoring in the first half, but it was a moment of quality from Ashley Fletcher that saw the Teessiders over the line at the Riverside Stadium.

One man who particularly impressed was Marcus Tavernier.

The 20-year-old has really shown his quality in recent weeks as he looks to use his movement and passing ability to break out of midfield and link up with the attacking two.

Tavernier took to social media after the game and couldn't hide his delight at picking up a positive result.

He simply captioned his post, "that winning feeling" with an image of him dancing after the end of the game.

Let's hope we'll see a bit more of this in the coming weeks.

The verdict

It's great to see Marcus Tavernier getting back to his best.

We all know that the 20-year-old is a real talent but a lack of opportunity to start in a run of matches seems to have stopped him hitting his stride.

Middlesbrough need a bit of a spark in midfield and the hope will be that Tavernier can be that man
