Bordeaux are interested in bringing Middlesbrough attacker Martin Braithwaite back to France and are looking to secure a deal for the player before the window shuts.

The Danish international was a big-money arrival on Teesside in the summer although he hasn’t managed to show his true form consistently.

Whilst injuries have hampered his progress, Braithwaite has scored just five goals in 17 games but that hasn’t put new Bordeaux boss Gus Poyet off trying to sign the former Toulouse man.

According to French newspaper L’Equipe, the Ligue 1 side want to sign the 26-year old on an initial loan deal with a view to making it permanent in the summer for around €8m. However, the report also suggests that Boro would prefer a permanent sale to go through now.

Braithwaite had hit double figures in the French top-flight for the two previous seasons prior to joining Boro and many had big expectations of their summer signing.

Yet, he has been in and out of the team under new manager Tony Pulis and was an unused substitute for the convincing win against QPR on Saturday that leaves Boro 8th in the Championship.

The Verdict

This move wouldn’t surprise you one bit. Middlesbrough have a lot of options in attacking areas and Pulis may want to bring in his own men this month, so sales could be inevitable.

The Denmark international is someone who could fetch a reasonable fee as well as removing a decent wage, so if he’s not playing it’s a move that makes sense.

Whether he should be playing is another question, as he clearly has a lot of class. But, if Pulis thinks he has better options then a move back to France could suit all parties.
