Middlesbrough are set to step up their interest in Rotherham United forward Michael Smith with Boro having already missed out on James Collins who has been signed by rivals Cardiff City, per Teesside Live.
There have been previous reports that Middlesbrough have been interested in making a move for Smith. That comes with the forward enjoyed a good campaign in the Championship, despite Rotherham’s relegation. The 29-year-old managed to register ten goals and provide a further three assists in his 44 league appearances for the Millers this term.
According to Teesside Live, Neil Warnock is keen to bring in at least three new strikers this summer and he is wanting them to press on with other targets now having missed out on Collins. Smith is one of the players they are keen to bring into the club. The Boro boss is believed to have been impressed by his performance when Rotherham beat Middlesbrough at the Riverside in January.
What club do these 21 former Middlesbrough players ply their trade at now?
It is being reported that Rotherham’s valuation of Smith could be a potential stumbling block with him still having another 12-months left to run on his current deal. However, Teesside Live’s report also indicates that the Millers would not be expected to stand in his way should they receive an offer that they deem to be fair for the 29-year-old this summer.
This would be a very good addition for Middlesbrough to make because Smith fits the bill perfectly for the role that Warnock would be hoping his new striker can perform at the Riverside. He is not the most prolific of forwards, but he has shown he can weigh in with important goals at vital times and if he gets the right service he will always be able to get to at least double figures.
From this report it does seem like Boro will really try and make this one happen, Rotherham would appear to be receptive to a potential sale for Smith if their price is met. Boro will need to do as much as they can to ensure that they get this one over the line. They can not afford to keep missing out on key transfer targets like they have done with Collins.
Smith is someone that you could see Warnock getting the best out of next season, it would be a signing that might not excite people at first but actually could prove to be a very wise investment by Boro this summer. It does seem like Boro will at least make a go at signing him in the coming weeks so Rotherham will need to be prepared for a potential bid for the 29-year-old.
