According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Middlesbrough and Garry Monk are set to rival Leeds United in the race to sign Swansea City’s Kyle Bartley this summer.

Bartley has returned to Swansea, where Paul Clement is set to give the defender an opportunity to prove himself in the Premier League, following a successful loan spell with Leeds last season in the Sky Bet Championship.

The 26-year old flourished under Monk at Elland Road, making 50 appearances and scoring six goals, as Leeds went within five-points of the play-offs - only missing out on a top-six finish following a late season collapse.

As Bartley headed back to Swansea earlier this summer, it was understood that Leeds would pursue a deal to bring the central-defender back to Elland Road ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.

However, Monk’s decision to resign from his role at Elland Road and move to Middlesbrough has cast doubt over Bartley returning to Leeds.

Monk is keen to link-up with Bartley again next season at the Riverside Stadium, particularly with doubt surrounding the future of two of Boro’s central-defenders.

Ben Gibson, an England international, is a target for a number of Premier League clubs, whilst Sheffield Wednesday have shown an interest in Daniel Ayala already this summer.
